Young Dancers Program

Bridge For Dance offers a wide variety of classes for children from age three through the teen years.

Our classes range from creative movement, pre-ballet, ballet, tap, modern, contemporary, jazz, aerial circus, hip hop, and more.

Our students learn the fundamentals of dance within the realm of a solid classical platform, starting in Creative Movement and Pre-Ballet. Bridge For Dance classes are perfect for the student who desires challenging classical pre-professional training, or the student who is hoping to have fun in a healthy and encouraging environment.

We provide a balanced and emotionally supportive environment in which each student feels important, safe, and inspired to flourish in their own way. A small student-to-teacher ratio allows much more personal attention for each student and for the staff the opportunity to know each family personally, giving our space an open and friendly feel.

The Young Dancers Program is a year-long program with weekly classes scheduled from September to May, ending with an exciting Recital whereby the children get a chance to perform what they’ve learned.

In addition, a variety of camps and workshops are also available during various holidays.

Class Descriptions

Creative Movement

Ages 3-4

When boys and girls turn three, they are welcome and encouraged to start their dancing with creative movement! Our creative movement is a sweet, nurturing, structured class using elements of pre-ballet, but taught through imitation and imagery.

This is not a free-for-all all undisciplined class!

Children will learn first and second positions, plie, chasse, relevé, saute, and more. There is some music with words (sing/song type) used in this class, that helps the little ones engage in the appropriate activities while learning how to stand in line, understanding spacial awareness, how to wait their turn, and proper entrance/exit.

We use some props including scarves, spots on the floor to keep their places, and allow a short time for “free dance”, where the little sweethearts have the freedom to express themselves in front of their classmates. This class is precious. After completion of 1 year of creative movement, the children are ready to move on to pre-ballet.

Pre-Ballet

Ages 5-6

In pre-ballet, the children learn the fundaments of ballet in a nurturing, supportive environment. This is the class where the children develop a real understanding and appreciation for the art of ballet. Through a fun series and a modified ballet class structure, students learn how to stand in line, understanding spacial awareness, how to wait their turn and proper entrance/exit.

We use some props including dancing with scarves, spots on the floor to keep their places, and allow a short time for “free dance” where the little sweethearts have the freedom to express themselves in front of their classmates. Children will learn first and second and plie, chasse, relevé, saute, and more.

Ballet

Ages 6-teens

In all levels of ballet, the children learn the fundaments of classical ballet in a nurturing, supportive environment. Through a traditional ballet class structure, students will do ballet at the barre, en center, and across the floor. Children will learn positions one through five for both feet and arms.

Ballet with Pointe

(By placement only)

Beginner pointe class begins with strengthening and mobility exercises for the feet and the entire body to gain and maintain the strength to dance on the tip of the toes in specially designed shoes.

Dancers approved for pointe work will be given advice on where to purchase shoes, what to look for, and how to sew their shoes in preparation for class. Once dancers are ready to work on pointe, class itself will incorporate exercises at the barre such as relevés, élèves, retirés and échappés.

Exercises will be designed to safely build strength, stamina, and balance in preparation for dancing on pointe without the barre.

Modern | Contemporary

Ages 7-teens

Modern & Contemporary dance is a wonderful class to take on its own or as an addition to training in ballet. The students will learn some of the classics in modern and contemporary dance including floor work, contractions, release, spiral, and moving with curvature of the spine. With exciting popular music that is easy to access emotionally, the students get a full body work out while learning to move with spacial awareness and full expression.

This class is very popular for ages 7-14. Ballet experience is helpful, but not necessary.

Aerial Circus

Ages 8 -Teens

Aerial Circus Class consists of work on aerial silks and lyra (hoop). On each apparatus, students will learn proper body positions, balances, poses, drops, and choreography. Each class will also include a warm-up, strength training, conditioning, and stretching. As your strength increases, so will your skill and confidence….you will be amazed at what you can do. This class is a hit, and fills up very quickly!

(Registration for Aerial Classes Levels Advanced beginner & UP by phone only)

Tap

Ages 6 -teens

In all levels of tap, children learn the fundaments of classical tap in a nurturing, supportive environment. Through a traditional tap class structure, students will do warm ups in center and exercises across the floor to rhythmic music. Children learn musicality and develop a broad spectrum of tap vocabulary and movement.

Hip Hop

Ages 6 -teens

Hip Hop is a high energy dance class for young boys and girls. During this super fun class, the children will learn great new, popular dance skills while getting exercise, learning movement and body awareness and having fun!

During class, the students will do a warm up, learn to count music, move “across the floor”, do physical floor work, stretches and choreographed dances in a group.  All students will dance to exciting, popular music they love while getting a full body workout that develops strength, technique, musicality and coordination- and they will head home happy! All music and movement is age appropriate.

Jazz

Ages 6 - teens

Jazz is a wonderful fusion of classical Jazz technique plus funky street stylized movement. This is a great class for someone wanting the fun class while still working on the technical elements that will make them a better dancer.

Make-Up Class Policy

We strongly encourage the highest level of commitment, consistency, and timeliness to most greatly benefit your child in their growth and development of their training, but we do understand that there are circumstances where missing class is inevitable. We try every year to make our policy as fair as possible, pertaining to the number of make-ups per child. Please read details below and don’t hesitate to call if you have questions or would like to schedule your child’s make-ups. 212 749 1165

Absences/Sick days

Maximum (sick day) absences to make up per semester (in addition to the holiday make-ups), is two. Please call ahead and let us know if your child will not be attending the class. If your child is absent for more than two weeks in a row, we will call you to follow up on their current status. Too many absences could result in them not being included in our May Recital! So please don’t miss! If your child is injured, they are welcome to come and observe the classes.

Holiday Make-Up Classes

We invite and encourage every student to try any class of their choice during their current semester in order to make up for classes missed during the scheduled holidays. We allow two holiday make up classes per child per semester, which is in addition to any sick day or other absences they might have.

We are sorry, but make-ups do not roll into the following semester of classes. Scheduling make-up classes earlier rather than later is always suggested! So please call the office to schedule make-ups as soon as possible!

School Outreach

Bridge for Dance offers educational outreach for public and private school students, teachers and dance educators as well as other organizations. When joining us for our outreach, you have the choice of coming to our studio for class, or having one of our wonderful instructors come to you either during the school day or during after school hours. A few facts about our philosophy here at The Bridge for Dance:

  • We believe that dance, as a kinesthetic practice, can have a valuable influence on dancers of all ages by stimulating our mind/body connection with a unique and exciting movement experience.

  • Our programs help develop awareness and support of dance and artists by promoting connections between dance, our community and educational system. In many cases, our work with students ties in directly to class curriculum and we encourage our experienced, educated instructors to work closely to the school coordinators and teachers to create the most efficient and relevant curriculum.

  • We offer a wide variety of outreach programs at affordable rates to schools and organizations. We utilize various dance forms such as Ballet, Tap, Modern, Jazz, Hip Hop, Karate and Tap. We can work directly with schools, parents or teachers to bring children to our studio to participate in classes/workshops, observe classes or professional rehearsals.

In-School Workshops/Assemblies

We have a wonderful faculty and network of the best dancers and dance companies in New York City. We would love to bring professional dance educators and/or dance companies to the school/organization for special performances, rehearsal observations and/or workshops. Please contact Bridge for Dance to find out more about this wonderful opportunity!

In Studio Classes/Workshops

Currently, we have a lovely class of pre-school children who join us on Wednesday mornings for an in studio, creative movement class from The Rita Gold Early Childhood Center, a program through Teachers College of Columbia University. Many of the students who were introduced to us through this program are now also students in our Young Dancers Program.

Fun dance classes, supportive environment, great teachers. My daughter is truly enjoying her experience here and loves going weekly. Thank you, Bridge for Dance! - Monica
