Katrina Phillip
Theatre Dance
Int/Adv Level
Katrina begins her
class with a classic jazz-style warm-up that also incorporates an
array of aerobic, calisthenics, Pilates, and yoga stretch and
strengthening exercises. Such a combination of movement is ideal
for the dancer to build strength, target his/her center, efficiently
isolate movement within all areas of the body, effectively
weight-shift, and to increase the dancer’s flexibility. Her warm-up
is continuous, which not only forces the dancer to increase his/her
endurance, but also enhances the quality of his/her performance
ability.
Immediately following
the warm-up may come a series of traveling combinations that will
have similar musicality & style as the routine soon to follow.
Routines will vary from
week to week, and several styles from several eras & cultures will
be presented. This extreme versatility is crucial for theatre
dancers, because it is their job to convey any given story the
director/choreographer/writer has created. So, expect going from
Lindy Hop to Hip Hop, and all else that lies in-between and outside
of…
Katrina’s movement
emphasizes the “telling of the story,” and outwardly expressing the
performer’s inner & passionate dialogue. This inner dialogue is
what motivates her choreography and highlights the technique &
rhythmic accents.
